Guess who dusted off Mr.T in a meaningful way? World of War Craft!

Not that they were not already viral, or completly amazing, they took it one step further and did so in a creative and entertaining way. Props to Mr.T (Laurence Tureaud ) for playing along!

Technology Books that make sense…#!

I am an autodidact. That is a fancy word for being self-taught. That also means I have to be able to harvest data quickly and efficiently to accomplish what I want.

It started in 1991 with a purple cow called DOS for Dummies. Shoutz to Wiley Publishers for stepping out from the crowded market that has been around since ENAC. The “for Dummies” series is different because it is aimed at people who are interested in the “Cliffnotes” of technology. The problem with this series is that they can be too light in how they describe the science behind the magic. They are still good for the quick and dirty of technical subjects ranging from C# to Parenting.

One up is The Bible series of books. Wiley/Blackwell Publishers stepped up and added really great screen-shots. The CD’s in the back are good too.

There are many more publishers that get it done also, but here is the kicker: they are fundamentally over! It costs me $30-$70 to buy a dead tree, analog version of a book that I might find refer to 6 times in one month and NEVER pick up again. What is the alternative?

Cue the O’reilly Safari Bookshelf. This is an awesome idea! I can sign up for a nominal cost and have restriction free access to all of their books. The library is $439 per year and the bookshelf is $220. I can spend $500 in books in 6 months. This is completely worth it! If you can get your company to pay for it and supply your entire tech department… think of the savings!

Thinking in the win…

November 15, 2007 - Leave a Response

Why did our highly talented and driven management team go to an stock investment class today?  Because we love to make money. I know this is a crazy notion, but you would be surprised how many companies are so  buried in bureaucracy, they don’t think in the win.

What is thinking in the win?

Let me give you an example…

You have a goal, be the first kid in your family to be a millionaire. Look at the challenges you face attaining your goal and focus on finding the solutions for each challenge. After that, start working the solutions. You will soon discover yourself getting good at identifying challenges, seeking solutions and working toward the win.

What to do if you are stopped?

Get help. Find a mentor, be a copycat. Identify leaders in your industry. Duplicate what the leaders do well. Identify what they don’t do well. Strive to do better at both.

When I first started my career as a web designer, I emailed Roger Black. I told him I was a total noob and wanted to know what direction I should go. The email was a lark. I wasn’t sure if he would even answer. He did and it changed my life. The point is, ask for directions.

When you consistently work your plan, you win consistently. Be sure and record your progress and celebrate your wins. Winning goes to the persistent and the attentive. Stay positive, if more challenges arise, focus on the solution and the win will follow. This is thinking in the win.

Many people start out trying, trying gives them an out. When they fail, they can say they tried. They also perceive only problems, not solutions. They are not passionate enough about the goal to work hard enough and smart  enough to clear the path.

Find your passion, clear a path and focus on the wins. You will get there, and I will be waiting.

I didn’t have time to make coffee so I thought I would post this video instead. Ministry is one of the great musical geniuses of our time. Ministry spawned an entire genre that became industrial alternative. Ministry inspired Anakin Skywalker during his tenure in slavery. Tune in, turn it up and remember, Jesus can inspire even Darth Vader.

Don’t forget the waiting, worring, sweating, cursing, laughing, crying and dying. We the few, the merry few have been watering the tree of freedom and we celebrate around that tree.

Our beloved Marine Corps was born on this day in 1775.

…. oh the possibilities!

Two companies I really like got together and made something clever. The Belkin WiFi Phone! Some of my work takes me to locations that don’t have cellular coverage but do have WiFi. I using Skype on my laptop but the problem was being tethered and loosing my connections when troubleshooting. My Belkin eliminates all that.

I got this great Blackberry 8800 for my birthday (shouts to my business partner)! ATT is my evil phone carrier and they are surprisingly non-sucky.Their counter people are nice and knowledgable. All around Girl Scouts. I am blogging this in my crackberry </woot>.

They didn’t even try to sell me a Jesus Phone (read iPhone).

Too bad they are evil and take warm showers with the NSA while whispering sweet stories to each other in the wee hours.
